Manic Sheep’s new album Rewind 2014 features nine tracks that had been stored on former guitarist Hung Yu’s hard drive for a decade. These tracks capture a year’s worth of creative sessions between him, vocalist Chris (Lo Yu-Ting), and drummer White (Wu Po-Ting) before Hung Yu left the band. Ten years later, the original trio has revisited and reworked these old recordings, bringing the music back to life. The first half of the album revives Taipei’s shoegaze scene, while the latter half spans krautrock, post-punk, and industrial rock.

In 2024, they returned to the past to complete the unfinished music. The band members now feel that, after a decade, they’ve finally matured enough to present these songs in a way that matches their original vision. Rewind is the act of physically turning back the tape, a way of reversing time to when music was still played on cassettes. We’ll never know how different reality might have been in a parallel 2014 where this album was released successfully. But at least in our timeline, we see Manic Sheep in 2024 manually rewinding time, revisiting the coolest, noisiest version of Taipei indie music.
